Touring Checklist

Memory Care

In memory care, the staff and the program are the product. Visit mid-morning or mid-afternoon when activities are running, and pay more attention to how caregivers interact with residents than to the décor.

First impressions

The building and grounds are clean, well lit, and free of odors.
Staff greet residents by name and make eye contact.
Residents look well groomed, appropriately dressed, and engaged — not parked in front of a TV.
Common areas are actually in use.
You were shown the whole community, not just the model apartment.

Staff and training

Ask what dementia-specific training every caregiver completes and how often it's refreshed.
Ask the staff-to-resident ratio for day, evening, and overnight shifts.
Watch how staff respond to a confused or agitated resident.
Ask how long the memory care director has been in the role.

Environment and safety

Confirm exits are secured and how the community handles wandering.
Check for enclosed outdoor space residents can use daily.
Look for clear signage, contrasting colors, and memory boxes or cues outside rooms.
Ask how falls and medical emergencies are handled and communicated to family.

Daily engagement

Ask to see this week's calendar and observe an activity in progress.
Ask how dining is handled for residents who need help eating.
Ask how the community personalizes care around a resident's history and routines.
Ask whether residents can stay through end of life and whether hospice is welcome.

Before you sign

You have the full fee schedule in writing, including move-in fees and how increases work.
You have read the residency agreement and know what triggers a move-out.
You have seen the most recent state inspection report.
You know who to call with a concern, and how quickly they respond.
You have talked to at least one current resident or family member without staff present.
